Sound problem.....

I am experiencing problems with the sound on my box, but only windows sounds. I am running Win2K, and can't remember when the problem started so that I could make a connection with changes. The problem is staticky (word?) windows sounds (startup, shut-down, error, etc.). When I play games or a CD everything seems to be fine. I have checked the drivers and have re-installed DirectX. Any ideas are much appreciated!!!

What sound card is it? Make sure you have the latest drivers for the card, check you have the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard... You can also try placing the soundcard in a different PCI slot.
