Sound problem with older laptop

Popped the HD from a real old HP laptop into a slightly newer old HP laptop. Everything was working OK, until I decided to upgrade audio drivers because my hard volume buttons were not working. Found the right device drivers for the current laptop, installed, everything installed OK and I got the message that my device should be working - but I have no sound. In the CP, under sound, I get the message that I have no sound device. Tried uninstalling and installing the drivers for the older model laptop I was using before, still no go. Uninstalled the audio controller in device manager and the drivers several times, still no go.

The driver software is automatic - you run an executable, there is no folder with .inf files. Even when I uninstall now, the hardware installs itself automatically on reboot. One thing I noticed is that when everything was working, there was a bunch of entries under audio - legacy drivers, codecs, a bunch of other stuff. Now just the WDM device is listed.

Any ideas?

Hp has a sound troubleshooting section:

Is the soundcard a Realtek? I had an issue where I went out of town for a few days and when I came back I wasn't getting any sound - it would show up in the mixer but I couldn't hear anything. Tried to boot with a Linux CD but still no sound. Not long after it would say "Not plugged in". Nothing I could do to fix it - wound up installing a spare sound card on the desktop. If your card is dead, you might consider a USB sound card since you have a laptop

You just need to get the all the needed drivers (including audio codecs and legacy audio drivers) installed.

According to the specification for Pavillion ze5300, it uses 16-bit Sound Blaster Pro-compatible audio; internal Altec Lansing speakers; Volume control buttons and mute button

Dont know enough about the unit, but the higher models (ie, ze53XX's) use conexant drivers:

You'll be able to eventually get it working, but you'll have to do the needed research. The information appears to be out there and it looks like lots of ways to try to get the audio back working.

That helps, thanks. Conexant drivers is the only thing I found on HP's web site for the ze5300 and what I installed. I'll have to try and find other drivers since I don't have the recovery CD they refer to in that support doc.
