Sound (?) problem with new laptop

I bought a new laptop for my daughter for school. Got it loaded fine with most software...never tested media playback. Shortly after she opened it, she put a music CD in and tried to play with Windows Media Player (and Itunes player). Gets message that sez audio is unavailable because something is wrong with it or it doesn't exist.

Reboot computer...playback works. Do some other stuff...no audio. for example, tried to run Windows Update through IE7 and while it was doing that, the Start bar kind of freaked out and turned grey. Comp continues to run, but now the audio is gone again. Does this over and over...

I deleted the audio devices in device manager and let windows reinstall. ALso downloaded and installed Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver for High Definition Audio followed by the Conexant HD Audio Driver. Same result...

So I'm not sure at this point if the problem IS the audio driver/chip or something else entirely. HP support has been no help so far. They had me create a batch file that restarts the audio driver when the computer reboots. It took me forever to get them to understand that it was not acceptable to restart the computer or run a batch file everytime the sound drops.

Does anyone have any idea what might be happening? Anyone with similar problems on an HP dv2000t PC?

I'll try to answer questions you have, but I left the lappy with my daughter and I am several hundred miles from her.

THanks

I guess reinstalling windows is the only option as it seems that you have done everything esle...
