Sound Problem (Chaintech AV-710)

Here's the story:
My AN8-Ultra motherboard has no onboard sound, but came with its own proprietary card. I installed a Chaintech AV-710 instead and everything was fine until for no appearant reason I began to only get sound from my right speaker. I checked the connections (fine), put in another pair of speakers (still only right speaker), updated drivers (problem still exists), and checked Control Panel (everything was balanced).

However, I get sound when I plug the jack into the soundcard's ALT-OUT. The card was functioning, just not the way it was supposed to.

By now I was convinced that the card was defective, so I put in the soundcard that came with the computer. It worked before when I tested it, but now it didn't work at all. I uninstalled it, put the Chaintech back in, and now I wasn't getting any sound at all from the Line-Out either! The ALT-OUT however, still works.

I'd rather have the card function the way it's supposed to so I'm still trying to figure out what the problem is- and it seems like the problem isn't even related to the card? I even reformatted and did a clean install of Windows and the problem still exists so I don't think its a driver issue anymore.

So finally my questions are: Could this be a motherboard/BIOS issue that just spontaneously happened? How could I fix it? I've tried two different cards and the problem just got worse (one speaker to no speakers) so I have no idea what's going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Does it work when you plug it into the 7/8 (rear or surround back) output jack? That's the best jack on the Chaintech anyway.

Yes it does...and even though I get sound, it bothers me that the line-outs on both my soundcards no longer function. Any ideas on why this is so? I just want to make sure everything is functioning correctly.

PS: I just updated my BIOS and the problem still persists.

Are you sure all your volume sliders and balance controls are in the correct positions?

I'd think reformatting would have taken care of all these problems, but might want to doublecheck...

I'm positive.

I just thought of something....maybe Windows is only outputting a digital signal? That seems to be the case right now. Does anyone know how to disable this function in Windows?

A digital signal wouldn't come out of an analog jack... and even if it did, the speakers wouldn't be working at all then.

Any other ideas?
1) Reformatted- to test Windows
2) New BIOS - to test motherboard
3) Swapped cards - to test hardware

What else could it be? I'm stumped.

When you put the old soundcard back in it didn't work at all?
Did you uninstall the chaintech drivers and install the correct drivers for it?

Yes.

I just replugged in the front audio cables and now I get sound from the right speaker again...

(front panel audio works fine)

What is the front panel audio connected to?

haha, my AV-710 did the same thing!

I eventually had to format the PC with the Chaintech OUT of the system before I could get ANY sound from ANYTHING... even the onboard audio.

The Envy24 chipset is great, but the AV-710 is a frickin pile of crap.

I eventually RMA'd the soundcard and went back to onboard. working fine after I formatted. The RMA'd Chaintech sits in a box on my shelf getting covered in dust. I don't trust it one bit.

Yeah that's what I was scared of- a defective card. Heh, I guess you get what you pay for. What's another good soundcard with front panel outputs?

CraigRT: So when you put in another soundcard, the sound was also messed up? This happened to me and have no idea how this can even happen!

Maybe you should RMA the card?

After what Craig said I'm kind of afraid to get another one. I just took it out, put in a different card, and there's still no sound. Is this a hardware (motherboard) or driver issue?

Isn't it still a new card? This should be no cost to you still probably.

You have no idea how much I tried. I went to the extent of swapping out the mobo, but as long as the AV-710 was in the system, no soundcard would work, not even the onboard. with the AV-710 out of the system DURING FORMAT, the audio would work fine (onboard)
Dont worry about front panel connectors, the majority of decent soundcards have them standard, just watch before you buy to make sure.

That is bizarre. You are using the latest 4.51c drivers from VIAARENA? The ones that come on the CD suck big time.

I have the AV-710 and have never had a problem. I am running a EPoX 9NPA+ Ultra board.

yeah that was the one i was using. i'm returning the card....it's been way too much trouble and i dont like having a problem thats this arbitrary. shame though since it sounded so good!
