so in my study room, I have 5.1 speakrs set up for my computer. Because of the small room, and short wires, I am not able to make it "surround sound." currently, all the speakers are just facing right in front of me, about 3 inches apart.....

is there a setup that can improve the feel of it? besides surround sound? right now, I feel like 4 boring speakers blaring at me...............any thing to improve that?

Get longer wires.

You could use software or hardware DSP to artificially widen the soundstage but you won't really ever get surround sound from one direction.

I suppose you could point the rear speakers to the side at a 45 degree angle so they'd reflect off the walls. Better than nothing.

Take the rear speakers, and put them at the far outside, pointing outward at a 45 degree angle. Or try pointing them upward. Or even backward, away from you.

If you can, take the wires on one of those rears, and reverse the polarity.

The whole point of multiple speakers is to put them on multiple sides of you. All the positional sound software in the world can't match that. Your best advice is

Get longer wires.

Take your setup up now and THROW IT AWAY. Go to your nearest home theatre center and purchase the MOST EXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT and then then set up a home theatre setup in your room. You will be the envy of your peers. Like having a FLAT SCREEN LCD DVD in your room.
