Sound not working in WMP9

Problem: Sound does not work in Windows Media Player 9 when playing any kind of video or audio file. Sound effect (like the ding, and login sound) work fine. Sound playing those same files tried in WMP9 work fine in Media player 6 and mp3s work in winamp perfectly. I've checked the output device that WMP is using i've tried both my sound card and direct sound (i think that's what it's called). Also checking through the web a lot of people had the mute button depressed, i've checked this, it's not depressed. i've checked all my sound card controls and they are all unmuted. What else can i do to make sound work?
