Edit: Found the problem:
Had to set the system device default.
I just replaced my headphones with a new pair of Sennheiser 363D.
My installation was basically:
Sticker said 'don't plug in until driver installed'. I went to their site for the driver, the installation said 'plug device in', I did and it finished and rebooted.
They have a box that plugs into the same USB port I was using, and it connects to the headphones by two stereo 1/8" jacks.
Now, IE and a game I tried have no sound. When I run Control Panel, it already showed these headphones as the default device for playback and record and its test play sounds.
This is Windows 7.
The game is World of Tanks. It has a sound configuration menu, I changed device from 'system to default' to the Sennheisers it already had in the list. No sound.
