Sound not Playing on DVD Software

I have an old Dell Dimension Machine running windows 98, and for years I used the dvd playing software that came with the computer, until recently when the sound stopped playing I'm totally guessing, but I believe the problem may have been caused by my downloading all sorts of codecs, to play divx files, but the thing is, I still need them so I'm not willing to erase them. Plus I'm sure a lot of people play divx files and use their dvd software, so there's gotta be a fix.

The video is perfect, but the problem is that the sound just doesn't play. So I tried installing Power DVD and the same problem, perfect video, no sound.

The only program that seems to work thus far is and evaluation copy of Blaze DVD, but the controls are a bit screwy and I don't feel like paying $50 for it.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the sound to work when playing DVD's. I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Dominic

You could try VLC http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ It's free and uses all it's own codecs rather than being a front end to the codes already installed on your system that media player uses. You can also get the k-lite codec pack. It install codecs for most everything and a player that resembles media player 6.x on steroids. http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm

also check your mixer if you havent already. start>programs>accessories>entertainment>volume control
