Just installed these logitech z-640 6 speaker system (2 fronts, 2 rears, 1 center, 1 sub) with an old 16bit sound card - everything seems to be plugged in right, but sound will not come out of the right and left *REAR* speakers

Running windows 2000 with winamp3

TIA

does it come out the front, too?

do you have a mixer or something, to play with them?

for a long time (i don't know what changed) i had to switch off of the 2-speaker setup on manually on every reboot.

the sound card is an old 16bit soundblaster type...

what could be the cause of the sound not coming out of the rear speakers?

You probly dont have a rear channel on your sound card. Its the same with my system... my motherboard only has center channel so it only plays out of the front middle and sub and not the 2 rear speakers.

im not up to date on sound cards really because i like to stick to onboard sound (i normally stay with Nforce series mobo's now adays) but i think Sana Cruz are good. Or maybe SOundblaster 5.1? not sure. Just make sure they have surround sound or support for rear channel so your other speakers willl work :)

Audigy 2 is supposedly best, but I like my two Santa Cruz's (the Live! I used to own caused all types of problems).

Your Second system still shows a SBLive. ;)

Santa Cruz is a good card; or if you feel the itch for another upgrade, get yourself a nice nForce2 board - the Abit NF7-S rev2.0 is supposed to be one of the best nForce2's out there. I've got a rev1.2, and it's still very good. The rev2.0 adds a few more things - official 400MHz bus support, more voltage options in BIOS, and a few other small tweaks that I don't remember off the top of my head.
It has 5 audio jacks too - no jack "sharing" like some other boards do: some nForce2's make the Line-in be the rear speaker jack, and the mic-jack serve as a sub/center jack, meaning, if you want all your speakers to work, you can't use a mic or Line-in, without swapping cords and changing settings each time.
And yes, this is the onboard sound - probably the best onboard sound on the mainstream market right now. It's said to rival the Audigy 2; maybe more like an Audigy 1.75.:)

Oh, yea, if you'll look in the tech help (EDIT-er...this) forum, that thing is having a lot of trouble. As of right now it's down to 256MB RAM and the SC :\... I just don't want to waste my time updating that until I get 512 meg working in there and it's stable.
