i just got my macbook pro yesterday. it's a mid 2014 model and it's brand new.

it booted up with an old yosemite version, so I upgraded it to el capitan. i then decided to move over stuff fro my time machine backup. i only moved over "data and settings" or whatever that checkbox was, the one that moves my settings over. i skipped applications and computer and network settings.

the sound definitely worked initially, but i have rebooted a few times since. then today i went to do a google hangout and notice that neither my sound or mic is not working. in the preferences nothing shows up for output or input devices.

anyone have any clue? my time machine backup came from a hackintosh, so i'm wondering if maybe something is conflicting driver wise, but as i mentioned, i only copied over some stuff not all of it. i primarily wanted all of my settings and stuff so i wouldn't have to worry about my keychain and overall settings. and i am positive at some point the sound worked.

also, the sound at startup before OSX is loaded is working fine, so the sound there works. it's just in OSX it is acting as though i have no audio devices.

below is what my audio shows up as under system info

Intel High Definition Audio:
Audio ID: 94

Internal Microphone:
Connection: Internal

External Microphone / iPhone Headset:
Connection: Combination Output

anyone have any idea?

I had something similar on an old mid 2009 MBP but it was the cam. Would not turn on for crap. OSX did not see it, apple couldn't help. Had to reinstall the OS clean. Sorry I cant help.

the camera works just fine. it was the sound/mic that weren't working.

i asked over on the hackintosh forum (tonymacx86) and one of the guys had me run a command that showed there are quite a few kext's in my directories that should not be in there. i'm going to try removing them when i get home and HOPE that fixes the problem.

In your Utilities folder (inside Applications folder) there should be an app called "Audio MIDI Setup". It will be a good place to start for troubleshooting. Make sure the built-in mic is recognized and being used for sound input.

i opened that last night and nothing was recognized on that either, just like my system prefs.

Make a new user account, see if the sound works there.

so yeah turns out it was the drivers conflicting. i removed all of the ones that were listed as being "bad" and it fixed the issue.

coincidentally every kext that was bad had a blue dot next to it in finder, so i guess that should have been a hint too.

on an unrelated note, holy shit it's crazy how fast these macbooks boot up.

It's the SSD. I put a 1TB ssd in my mid 2009 MBP and it breaths new life.

yeah i have an ssd in my desktop and it definitely makes a difference, but this is like double the speed of that. i swear it boots up to being usable in less than 10 seconds.

Have you figured out you can't kill a MB yet?

The damn things will connect to WiFi and download the OS if you wipe the hard drive, impressive...

Lol, my mid-2011 MBP *just* got back from Apple after having the Logic Board replaced for the second time.

The first time happened 2 days after I bought it. Laptop crashed, and then would only beep when booting up. Apple replaced the logic board and it was fine.

Fast forward to last week (and now my fiancee uses it), and the thing crashes while shes playing Minecraft. It boots back up but now there's distorted lines all over the screen. Turns out its the problem Apple extended the warranty for regarding the GPU failing due to high temperatures. New logic board.

Now we'll see how long this lasts. High quality laptop? Absolutely. Unstoppable? Hardly :p
