What media do the play the sound on at the movie theather? And how do they kept it in sync with the film? Is the sound stored in on the film somehow?

Dolby Digital is actually part of the filmstip. DTS is on an optical disc but uses a timecode on the filmstrip to keep sync.

Edit: BTW, the analog Dolby track and the SDDS track are also on the film. I didn't think to mention them at first because they aren't as popular.
