The speakers on my wife's Dell laptop stopped working but the headphone jack still works. I tried checking what I could but I haven't been able discover what's up with the speakers.

Any suggestions as to what could be wrong?

The only thing I can think of is the internal switch that turns the speakers off when you use headphones but I can't see anything physically wrong when I look in the headphone jack.

The speakers could have simply died, or the cable could have popped loose. If your not very comfortable with taking stuff apart getting to them will be... interesting.

I believe in using 5.1 external speakers for my laptops. If after re-installing the drivers and they still do not work. You have two choices. Pop the case open and check for loose wire/cable or invest in some nice external speakers. What can I say...I love to listen to loud music from loud speakers.

I first tried updating the driver using the windows tab for the speakers but ultimately
I went to Dells web site and re-installed the driver from there.......Success!

Thanks Quiksilver and the rest who responded to my post.

The wife was having a fits over the problem. I knew that I would get it straight eventually.
