Sound issue on Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H mobo

I just built a new system (I have threads for the whole system and cpu specifics up in general hardware and cpu/oc forums respectively if you want to know more about the build) with a Phenom x3, 2 gb ram, and the Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H mobo. I installed everything tonight flawlessly, and it was one of the easiest build/installs ever. Now that I have it up and running, I updated all drivers and couldn't wait to throw on some HD content on my plasma to actually watch 720p/1080p files without stutter. So I install codecs and VLC, then throw on 1080p Serenity. Looks great, sounds good, and I'm happy. Then it starts tearing and chopping on me (this might be due to formatting a second partition on the C: drive), and after a minute or so I realize that there are no voices.

So I have two issues:
First and most important is the audio issue where I get all sound but no voices/dialog

Second which isn't a huge deal because adjusting the priority to high in task manager fixed it, just annoying to have to do it every time I try to play a movie.

Anybody have any fixes?

PS. the one possible cause of the audio issue that I can think of is, that it is sending the audio over the HDMI cable to the TV for 2.1 sound and the other speakers for surround. I need to figure out how to disable the audio over HDMI.
