sound fx software

i am looking for a piece of software that will allow me to create my own soundtrack to a small video, hopefully freeware or if not at least a trial.

it would be best if i could "drag" the sounds to a timeline, then perform simple effects on them (crop, volume ect).
it's also quite important that it would show the vieo while i'm doing this.

does anyone know such a program?

PS. i have already tried quicktime pro, virtualdub and a few other sound editing packages

Soundforge and CoolEdit?

Both are not free but they do have trials i think. Probably the best consumer sound editing software out there.

but do they allow you to view the video at the same time, i don't want to have to mux it together just to preview it
