sound drivers

what are the advantages and disadvantages of the latest realtek driver, vs the Xfi MB3 driver, vs the microsoft driver (as of which im using now and it sounds pretty good although CL's audio rendering does sound a little bit better it costs money)?

didn't know drivers had much to do with the sound but only the soundcard itself and the files

I can see it now as since vista onwards all the sound processing is done in software now.
there could be some features as well that you may want to use that is only exposed with the drivers.
