I have a 2.4ghz p4 on a gigabyte GA-8SR533P mobo based on a SiS 645 chipset. The PC is custom built. Im dual booting XP pro and win98.

Recently, i had trouble with the sound driver. The sound driver, Realtek Avance ac97 was fine, until, for no reason, it failed. The Found new hardware window came up one day when i booted up into XP telling me that a new Sound controller had been found. Opening Sounds and Audio devices in the control panel told me that no audio device was detected.

somehow, after many hours, i manged to reinstall the drivers off my cdrom provided with the mobo - only to find out the next time i booted up my PC that the drivers had failed again! In add/remove prog. it says the Avance ac97 audio drivers had been intsalled! But there is no sound drivers according to winXP! Out of interest, in 98, i have also expreinced no sound.

Im quite deperate and any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Did you try the latest drivers from REALTEK?

Realtek ALC650 audio driver v3.45

The CORRECT installation proceedure.

For Win2000/WinME/WinXP (WDM driver)
Set up Driver/Application for first time:

Step 1: Before installing the Realtek AC'97 Drivers & Applications, press the
[Cancel] button if Windows detects the PCI Multimedia Audio device.

Step 2: Insert the ?Realtek AC'97 Drivers & Applications? CD into the CD-ROM
drive and run the setup.exe program to finish the installation.

Step 3: Click on [Next/OK/Go] to continue the procedure. If the Windows pop-ups a
?Digital Signature Not Found? message, press [Yes] to continue the
installation.

Step 4: Finally, select restarting the system and press [Finish] to complete the
installation.
The system will reload the drivers and do some adjustments in the INF file if
so required.

Update Driver/Application:
Step 1: Follow Step 2, 3, 4 described above in [Setup for first time] to complete the
procedures.

Remove Driver/Application:
Step 1: Go to Start\Settings\Control Panel.
Step 2: Select [Add/Remove Programs] icon.
Step 3: Select ?Realtek AC'97 Drivers and Applications? and press
[Change/Remove] button.
Step 4: Click on [Next/OK/Go] to finish the uninstallation.
Step 5: At the end of the procedure, select restarting the system and press [Finish] to
complete the uninstallation.

For Win98 Gold (First Edition)/Win98SE
Set up Driver/Application for first time:

Update Driver/Application:
The same procedures in Win2000/WinME/WinXP.
Remove Driver/Application:

The same procedure in Win2000/WinME/WinXP.
