sound doesn't work in linux after updating to 2.2.18 kernel

just compiled the linux 2.2.18 kernel. when i use this new kernel sound doesn't seem to work. when i was using the 2.2.17 kernel, i could type "more /dev/dsp" and get some weird output signifying that the sound card is working. now i do the same thing and it says that there is no dsp. i have a soundblaster live value and the driver is compiled into the kernel. any ideas?

this problem should be independant on sndconfig (which i don't have) and more an issue of /dev/dsp since the driver is already installed.

Sounds like you need to double check the options you compiled into the kernel, make sure you enabled everything you need for /dev/dsp to work.

i can't really think of anything else. i just checked off all the options i needed for sound support. this has never happened with any other kernel i tried compiling.

Hmm, that is really strange, I might try out the 2.2.18 kernel myself and see if I can figure it out. I have been using the 2.4 kernel's as they have been very stable for me and have a crapload of new options that are great. Might wanna look into them too.
