Sound device not working ? details below .. please help ?

system : dell optiplex GX620

Problem : no sound

please note : this is fresh windows XP home installation.

what have i tried so far
1) checked in device manager, there is no yellow mark on sound device controller
2) installed drivers from dell websie for optiplex GX620 but it came back with error message " drivers are not compatible with computer hardware"
3) updated BIOS to latest version available for this system on dell website
4) cant's uninstall sound devices on device manager so i could not do that.

please let me know if i can try anything else ?

I have downloaded all available updates from microsoft updates but still having same problem .. could anybody please help me here or is it time to install a sound card on it ??

drivers for my sound devices are ADI 198xx integrated drivers . so i tried from dell website first but no gain .. then i tried it from cnet.. its coming back with HDA audio bus drivers are not found ..any suggestion ??

My motherboard is Foxconn LS-36 , if that would help in anyways and sound card is integrated ..

If you didn't intially re-install the original drivers from a CD/DVD, I'm not sure how you downloaded all drivers from Dell's website because, typically, you won't be able to go online until you've installed the network driver and other chipset components.

When restoring a machine, I prefer to download all updated drivers before I start and, once the base Windows installation is done, copy them to a folder on the new build and install them from the hard drive.

If your onboard audio is HD, an important question is whether you installed the Microsoft UAA driver BEFORE you attempted to installed your audio driver. If not, that could cause your problem. See here.

Version 1.0a of the Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio class driver for Microsoft Windows has been released. This release supports the High Definition Audio and Modem implementations that are known to Microsoft as of August 1, 2004. This is the second version of this driver.

Version 1.0a of the UAA High Definition Audio class driver does not work on High Definition Audio implementations that were disclosed to Microsoft after August 1, 2004.

You must uninstall version 1.0 of the UAA High Definition Audio class driver before you install version 1.0a. For more information about version 1.0 of the UAA High Definition Audio class driver, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

835221 Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio class driver available for Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and Window 2000

Note that if your original installation disk installed version 1.0 of the UAA driver, you must uninstall it before installing version 1.0a.

To get the current UAA driver, you must request it as a hotfix from Microsoft. The link for that is on the page at my link.
