I bought some stuff from a company near me. Applied it liberally to the inside of my case. Didn't do a bit of good. Invest in some quiet fans, you'll be better off. JMHO.

Well, unplug Your HDD, then switch the computer on. In my case 99% of the sustems noise came from my HDD, which was an ordinary 7200rpm drive.
I bought a new Seagate Barracuda IV 40G, which is supposed to be the most quiet HDD out there and, believe me, it really is, I do not hear that drive even if it is working hard, like bootup and stuff, silent when doing nothing, just spinning.
The old drives noise was exactly like from a fan (first I was sure it was my PSU fan, until I did that unplug step-by-step experiment), I guess it is from the spinning of the platters.

In fact Papst fans are more quiet than the Sunon fans Tetsuo is referring to.
I got one of those 80x80 12dB fans - well, it is just absolutely SILENT.

Operating under this theory and putting together a new system with a 15K SCSI cheetah, I decided to order an Aluminum Hard Drive Heat Sink which has a one pound aluminum bed that the HDD goes into and then the whole shebang goes into a 5.25 bay. While the unit also comes with some fans, I'm hoping that the net effect is somewhat quieter. I'll be putting it together this week and let you all know what the result is. Since I'm building up a system from scratch, everything will be open and it'll be easy to try different permutations of components powered on/off.

I got some Dynamat (at a discounted price!) from a good friend of mine who runs a car audio business. It was a bit of an experiment to be honest. It did quieten things a bit but not as much as I was expecting. I have four fans in my HX08 case( inc. PSU).

This stuff us really meant for low frequency deadening. The way it works is by adding mass to an object and really is meant to 'stiffen' panels to stop them vibrating.

If you want to stop fan 'whine' and airflow noise then try some shaped foam such as Tetsuo suggests or similar with a complex surface texture to stop high frequency sound reflection. I've yet to try this but it's next on my list!

If your handy with a Dremel then cut out any case metal infront/behind fan inlets/outlets. I found this cut airflow noise (i.e. turbulence) by alot.

Good luck.. Yoshi ;)
