Sound Crackling in Unreal Tournament and Counter Strike **Update: Now No LAN Capabilities. "Server is Outdated"**

Here's my rig:

- 1.4GHz Athlon T-bird
- MSI K7 Master
- 384 MB of Crucial PC2100 DDR SDRAM
- VisionTek nVidia GeForce3 (Detonator XP 21.85 Drivers)
- Quantum Fireball 40.0 GB @ 7200 RPMS
- Creative Labs SB Live!
- Windows XP Home Edition

My system is now at stock speeds, but I still get crackling sounds when shooting, etc. I'm thinking it's possibly a driver issue with the SB Live! card? Also, it could be that I'm running SETI in the background. Otherwise, I haven't got a clue.

Thanks.

EDIT: BA 735 speakers with a sub.

One way to find out 😉,also have you tried the SB live in a different PCI slot?

I have the latest SB Live! drivers, VIA PCI latency patch, and 4in1 drivers. I also have the latest BIOS. I think it may be the speakers.

Yah I had the exact same problem with a similar setup. Applied the latency patch, checked and rechecked everything. Changed the soundcard and had instantaneous resolution of the problem...its the Live! card dude. Chuck it.

I am having the same problem in UT, but I have the integrated CMedia audio on the Soyo Dragon. I did install that lat. patch too.

You're probably right. :disgust:

The Live! cards are known to be basically, sh!t when it comes to UT and Unreal, but I have no problems with CS. My brother had a similar problem, he had Windows ME and everything was fine, then he upgraded to XP and he started getting crackling, couldn't fix it with drivers so we figured the card just didn't work right in XP and he got a new one, and it works fine(he actually had a SB PCI128, and got a SB PCI512, I have the Live! Value and we both have the crappy sound problems in UT)

It's a VIA issue, not a Live! problem -- hardware or software. I've never had any trouble with Live! / Audigy on non-VIA chipset based boards. ALi, SiS, Intel ... never had such problems. I know a few people reported a latency issue with i815, but I certainly never did. The only boards that every gave me headaches all had VIA chipsets. YMMV.

Thanks for the help guys. I've come to the conclusion that it's a Creative Labs problem. It seems my SB Live! is just crap. XP drivers aren't all that great either.

Oh well, I'll be looking into Santa Cruz cards soon enough.

I have the crackling problem also and have tried many things to fix it. It only happens in my 2 drivin sims, no where else. It's not very loud but it can be annoying a bit. I see a bunch of posts referring to havin this problem under WinXP all over the net. Not everyone of course has the crackling uner XP, dunno why some do

Tried all kinds of drivers for my Creative Sb Live card, no dice
Moved sound card to other PCI slots
Bought new Turtle Beach, still there
Bought new speakers, went from BA 735's to Logitech Z560's...yep still crackling
Checked every setting in WindozeXP and the sims i could possible think of and several suggestions from others, crackling

ESC KS75A mobo

I've just learned to live with it until i get around to reformattin my OS ..hope it clears it up

<< Pop the same card in to a non-VIA chipset based board.

The SB! Live is hardly a crap sound card.
>>

Well, we'll see. I'm grateful that my friend is letting me borrow his Santa Cruz card for tonight. I'll tell you guys about it within the hour.

Well, it's definitely the SB Live! sound card. I swapped my bud's Santa Cruz and sure enough the crackling goes away. After slipping my SB Live! back in, I still encounter the same problems.

Boy, Creative Labs is really terrible. My other SB Live card also gave me some minor problems, and that was using my parents 440BX based PIII system! Gawd, drivers and/or SB Live! hardware is suck IMO. :disgust:

Luckily, my secondary system is happily chugging along on nForce sound. 🙂
