Sound Card

Several days ago, I asked for some info on software to help me record msuic off of the internet. With the replies, I ended up downloading the Total Recoeder software.
Now, I have another problem. The audio quality of the cd's I burn is bad! I am using a Sound Blaster pc16 card. (Kinda old)
Would I benifit by replacing the card with a newer card? If so, what which one woud be best?
I mostly listen to music off the internet. There is the possibility of expanding into playing dvd's in the future. And, making audio cd's to be played at work or in the car with the music I have downloaded.
My system is a 1.2 gig T-bird, ASUS a7v133a motherboard, 768 mb ram, Windows XP home, Acer write, rewrite, 3 hard drives with 190 gig of storage.

Yeah, that card if pretty old. I'd say that any soundcard available today would offer better quality across the board. If your budget is tight, pick up a generic C-media 8738 4 ch card. These cards usually come with S/PDIF in/out too (Check them first), and offer great 3D sound support, and decent sound characteristics, and good drivers. You could also go for something like a Hercules Fortissimo III. In the high end, you could choose from a number of cards like the Audigy2, TB Santa Cruz, or Philips Seismic Edge/Acoustic Edge (my favorite).

Holdencommodore, thank for the info. When I built my present pc, I used a few parts from the old one I had. When I say old, I am talking about a Intel Pentium 166mhz!!! The sound card is a leftover from that relic. I've been looking at the TB Santa Cruz for a while along with the Audigy2. Philips is one I haven't looked at yet and will check it out this weekend.
With any new card, my biggest concern is the driver support and compatability with WinXP abd the Total Recorder software.
