what is the difference between this card and audigy2 zs? the quality of the sound? or just the price🙂

The E-MUs are pretty good. Can't give a recommendation without knowing more about what is required.

Chaintech AV-710
A great card and its only ~$25.00
you can also flash this card and use Audiotrak Prodigy drivers.

the audio of my nvidia MB also support 6.1, i think it is named as "soundstorm"(im not positive though), how is that compared with the chaintech card? i mean the sound quality.

From what I have read, soundstorm is generally considered as a little better than the SB live and Audigy 1 but inferior to the Audigy 2. I don't know about the chainteck cards but I have heard good things about them

I'm about to get and HDA X-Mystique since it seems like most manufacturers have given up on DDL since soundstorm 🙁

why is that card good?

It does real time Dolby Digital encoding (they call it Dolby Digital Live) that allows a digital connection to a receiver to get the correct surround sound from games. A normal digital connection will only give you surround from something already encoded like a DVD. The X-Mystique takes the analog signals and forms an AC-3 signal out of them.

For gaming I've been on 7 channel stereo on my $1300 sound system for about a year now. Normally I think spending more than $50 on a soundcard is a pretty bad idea, but I want this feature and it's the only thing that offers it right now.

Are games the only things that use 7.1-channel sound? Or do some movies have 7.1-channel soundtracks as well?

In my case, I actually haven't paid too much attention to whether my movies have a 5.1 vs a 7.1 track because my receiver uses Dolby Digital EX (7.1) whenever a Dolby source is being played (I know for sure some are 5.1). I think some have Dolby Digital EX tracks meaning they have 7.1 tracks.

Somebody tell me if I'm wrong. I'm not sure I've got this right.

so it looks like something you would use for gaming, but not when you're listening to music (because it resamples the output)..?

Nope. DVD's support 5.1 - no more, no less.

The Creative Audigy 2 is generally considered pretty good. There are a few different models, depending on you budget, and what exactly you want from a sound card.

Yeah, I'm planning on using it for gaming but in the case of music just sending out the PCM signal for my receiver.

I know they support less than 5.1 for sure 😛
(some have dolby surround tracks... 2 channel tracks... etc.)

if you really need multichannel sound, anything with envy24 will sound much better than audigy stuff.
or if you use headphones or quality 2 channel speakers like me, an emu 0404 or 1212M will work better 😀
