Sound card with optical out recommendations??

What kind of speaker setup do you have? The Logitech Z-680s, Klipsh, or a home theater receiver setup? I'm kind of wondering the same thing as far as soundcards go, since apparently, nForce3 250 doesn't have SoundStorm either. 🙁

Your choices are pretty limited in consumer level market. Unless you actually want something with a breakout box or LiveDrive, here are a few options I can think of:

1. Fortissimo III. The Fortissimo II had it too, but I haven't seen one on the market in a long time.

2. The VIA ENVY 24HT-S generics. ie. Mad Dog Entertainer, Chaintech AV-710, or Gainward Hollywood@Home. There may be others, but they're all essentially watered down versions full ENVY cards like the Revo.

3. SBLive and Audigy *WITH* a Hoontech DBIII add-on daughter SPDIF. Problem is, the adapter only works with certain models of SBLive/Audigy, which I don't think are manufacturered any more. You have to sure before buying.

Having owned all of the above, they're all pretty much equal. No clear winner. Some will do things better than the other and vice versa.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I'm looking for an upgrade to my Fortissimo III, but I can't find anything that's appreciably better without heading into the professional level cards. I need DAT because I use this PC with my JVC Mini-disc system.

Of course, another option is to replace the motherboard entirely with a nForce2 board + SoundStorm. Just make sure it's one that has the digital output adapter included.
