Sound Card Problem

Hey all, long time no post. I was wondering if i could get some advice on something.

I had a creative sound blaster 24-bit live in my system, and it was hooked up to a normal desktop mini-system, I started to realize that the sound was getting fuzzy, straight-up crappy. If i played a CD in the stereo itself it sounds fine, clear and sharp. So I went to Best Buy and bought a creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer (I had a $50 gift card) and installed it, updated to the latest drivers, and still i get bad sound from the speakers. I have tried playing MP3's from the HDD and playing a CD from the cd-rom, in both cases they sound bad, but again a cd directly in the stereo sound good.

any ideas?

Can you hook up a CD player or mp3 player or something instead of the computer to see if it's the input on the system that sucks?

I hadn't thought of that at all
unfortunately, I just tried it using a sony discman and the same CD I had been using and it sounded fine.

so the stereo's inputs seem to be fine.

How do you define "bad sound from the speakers"? Do you mean you get a lot of crackling noises, snap, crackle, pop (SCP), or that sort of thing? Or does it just sound crap as in it just doesn't sound good ? If it is the latter, then it is very likely your EAX Settings. It defaults to game settings, so you have to get into the habit of changing them in your EAX control panel. Believe me, setting it correctly makes a HUGE difference in sound quality.

Launch your Creative Audio Console. From the dialog box, pick the EAX tab. Click the option Advanced EQ on that page, and on the right-hand side, pick the type of music you are listening to (ie. pick Rock for The Who, Nickelback, etc.). Then make sure the way you have connected it to the stereo is also selected. If you have an SPDIF connection, ensure that is selected with the sampling rate you want in the SPDIF tab, then make sure the speaker settings tab is set up correctly (5.1, 6.1, etc.). IF you are doing passthru to your stereo, select that on the Decoder tab instead of having the X-Fi do it, although the decoder on the X-Fi is quite good. But if you have it built into your stereo, may as well pass it through. Once you have it all set up like that, it should sound amazing.

If you have the SCP problem I originally described, that is a whole different ballgame.

BM.

BM, thanks for your input.

I would define it as not sounding good, no SCP, just fuzz. I do not have an Advanced EQ option under the EAX tab in my console. I have version 2.00.09
I should mention that I have "creative console launcher", not "creative audio console" if that makes a difference.

well it turns out that i had some settings in windows media player 11 messed up, by that i mean they were on. SRS and the EQ's were messed up. my friend (jamesbond007) figured it out.
thanks for the imput tho.
