Sound Card Problem

I just finished reformating my drive and I'm having some trouble with my sound card. I have a SoundBlaster Live (Not sure if it's the Value or just plain Live! but drivers are the same either way) and Windows XP should normally auto-detect the card and install its drivers. For some reason, it didn't. So I dug up my cd with the Live drivers on it and installed that. The card seems to be working fine but the drivers on the cd I installed are pretty old. When I try to download the latest drivers from the website, I get an error saying I don't have a Soundblaster soundcard? Any idea what's going on?

I also have the Soundblaster Live Value, and before upgrading to WinXP Pro, I went to Creative Labs and downloaded the latest drivers and burned them on a CD - then after going through the upgrade, I installed the latest drivers - had no problems at all. Maybe you should try that, then uninstall the Soundblaster and reinstall it, using the new drivers - can't hurt :)

Try what Instiga8er said, and if that doesn't work, you could try going into your BIOS and resetting the configuration data (usually under Plug and Play options).

That's the weird part... when I try to update to the new drivers from the website it says I don't have a soundblaster? Even though my device manager says Soundblaster Live.

And there's nothing in the BIOS that needs to be changed.

If you have some kind of ftp server or something maybe someone can upload the drivers for you? I think my drivers are fairly new, but I know they work with XP anyway. Don't use the built-in Microsoft drivers because they're horrible. If you run the Creative Diagnostics while using those drivers half of the tests fail with the Windows drivers.

Actually, use this link:
http://www.americas.creative.com/support/files/download2.asp?centric=107&maincat=11&os=10&subcat=16
Paste that into your browser.

Yeah that's the thing - I've download those exact drivers in the link but when I try to install them, the setup quits and says I don't have a Soundblaster card?

I used to have that problem in Win2k as well. Try moving the card to a different PCI slot.

Or get a better sound card :)

That sucks. I'll try moving it to another slot.

Going to be picking up an Audigy 2 soon anyway though..
