Sound Card not working - HP computer

I have a stupid HP with a modem/soundcard combo. Its a conextant driver and it took me a while to find a driver for Windows 2000 and I think it's kind of bootleg. I always had to reinstall my driver sometimes when I restarted my computer. Anyhow, sometimes it would work and other times it wouldnt or I would have to restart twice to get it working. Now its not working at all. I think the problem may be that I have too many drivers installed for it. If I uninstall/unplug device to get rid of the drivers, will this cause my soundcard to not work at all and do I have to do something before I reinstall another driver? Basically how do I safely remove all those drivers?
