Sound Card Issue

I built a computer last summer and never bought a sound card and was using the realtek onboard audio on my EVGA X58 SLI motherboard.

Initially I noticed a difference in the sound switching from my old computer and felt the sound was too bassy and unfortunately the realtek software didn't have adjustments for treble and bass.

I have an older Altec Lansing 5.1 sound system

but they've always sounded pretty good to me and still do for the most part with music and movies.

When I bought Battlefield Bad Company 2, however, I noticed that the speakers definitely felt like they were being overpowered with bass and everything sounded distant/muffled.

I took my old Sound Blaster Audigy sound card out of my old computer and installed it to see if it would sound any better but for some reason the rear speakers were much louder than the front and center speakers. I tried games that I know worked with the onboard audio and had the same problems as I did with BFBC2.

I've updated the drivers and everything and I'm running Windows 7 64bit.

My hope would be the sound card would possibly sound better and I could adjust treble and bass levels.

Is there a reason the sound card would be causing this to happen?
Would the onboard audio still be better than an old Creative SB Audigy card?

Thanks

Is there no option to adjust bass under advanced audio controls in windows, not including the installed driver software?
