I am trying to diagnose a problem on a friend's computer. It is running Win98SE, and hangs up the whole system when any type of sound is played on its ISA sound card (ES1869F). There are no conflicts in the device manager, and all the drivers seem to be properly loaded. I have tried disabling all other devices (modem, NIC, communications ports, etc...), to try and determine what could be causing the problem, but to no avail. I have also tried a different ISA sound card, but the same problem occurs. Any advice would be appreciated...

Hmm, well device manager sometimes doesn't show conflicts. Have you tried seeing which device the sound card is sharing an irq with? Go to device manager-> computer->properties->IRQ.
