sound card for home recordings?

I'm interested in recording sound into my computer, and a friend said that I would need a sound card to properly record from a guitar. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Here's my current system:

A7N8X Deluxe w/ Barton 2500
1 GB RAM
2 x 160 GB Drives
Matrox G450 Video Card

Whats your budget? How concered are you with quality? Is this just for messing around or for serious recording?
 
I'd prefer to keep it under $100, but I'd be willing to go as high as $150 if it would make a significant difference. For now, I'm messing around, but it would be nice to have a reliable card that I could make a good quality recording with in the future.
 
That's a good card. You need a guitar preamp too of course, which I would suppose is slightly more critical than the sound card.
