sound card for a win 98 legacy box?

Can anyone recommend a non Creative Labs sounds card that has a game port for use in a Win 98 legacy gaming box?

-- I have an SB Live, but the installation disc is long gone and all I can get from the creative website seems to be the bare drivers?...so would rather try something else. Thanks.

I have an old Turtle Beach Santa Cruz that would work perfect.

yeah I do remember hearing about the Turtle Beach stuff will have to look them up on Amazon and/or Ebay and see whats available.


And yes, the CL website does not include all the stuff that comes on the original installation CD just the bare drivers and a few apps -- pretty poor product support (though I admit the SB live series is pretty ancient).

CL applications from a Live! or Audigy install CD would be a little dated at this point.
Why would you need more than straight driver?
Are there specific programs that you're looking for?

As far as old school CL audio goes, the Audigy 2 ZS is a sweet little card.

Aureal Vortex was a great card. I think the Hercules Game Theater cards used the same Aureal chip and drivers, but it's been a long time so I could easily be wrong.

It's too bad I threw out my old DOS / Windows soundcards awhile back or I could send one or two for the postage.

I see an "Aureal A3D" on ebay for $2.99 Buy-it-now, +$5 shipping, but the auction's over in 4 hours.

Now however it looks like that the sound card ships with drivers that only work with xp and above ut there are legacy drivers on the site that would look like they would work with 98. Also there is the drivers for the santa cruz on there as well. Probally had the same sound blaster that i had growing up probably still have it maybe if i kept the sound card when our PSU basically imploded a few years ago on our old windows 98 box.

OP, where are you located? I have a Live! applications CD. The card is dead, so it's just taking up space in my "junk hardware" closet.

I also don't see why you'd want anything other than the drivers installed. Even back in the day I didn't bother install that other junk. You don't need any of it to play games.

If you're playing MS-DOS games on this machine, the SoundBlaster Live! has the best SoundBlaster emulation, better than a real SoundBlaster 16 in some ways. Well, assuming you have a compatible motherboard... Pentium 4 or newer and its emulation probably won't work.

You don't need anything other than the bare drivers to for a Windows 98 legacy gaming box. He may feel he needs the complete install, but its not at all clear that it would actually be useful to him. A completely diifferent sound card isn't going to come with all the same junk that the SoundBlaster Live! did either.

The only thing I can think of is maybe the base CL drivers don't include the DOS Sound Blaster emulation library?

But unless OP comes back to the thread, we'll never know.

First post was a little ambiguous on this point, as Blain correctly pointed out -- OP should probably clarify whether or not he needs the apps for use apart from gaming, in any event.

Thanks for all the replies guys. True you don't need anything other than the bare drivers to get the card going. But things like speaker set-up, environmental effects and mixer stuff etc.. seem to be missing.

Also, I realized you have to be very careful which SB live you get --- there are many versions (which one can easily buy on Amazon/Ebay --- but almost none have the original install disc).
After re-thinking things I think I will get the CT 4670 --- this is the original SB Live Value. Paradocially I don't have the card but still have the original Creative SB Live value installation disc. Never had a problem with this card in Win 98 games.

I have a disk image of the driver CD for SB live cards, worked on all of the SB live cards I tried. PM me if you want it.
