Sound card for 5.1 speakers

Hey all,

Can anyone recommend a decent soundcard for 5.1 speakers... probably just listening to mp3s, thanks!

I have $45 Logitech X-530's that are amazing, I woulda never thought I could hear this out of such cheap speakers, price wise cheap.. 😛

But I hear the Logitech Z-5300, and the Z-5500 are very good also

He's asking for a soundcard, not speakers.

Anyway, just about anything sold today will give you 5.1 sound, but you should realize your mp3s are stereo, not 5.1. They will not play out of all of the channels unless you use some upmixing program (often bundled with a soundcard) but that sounds like crap. Grab a sound blaster live 5.1 for $20 if all you need to do is play mp3s.

M-Audio Revolution 5.1 Sound Card. Good stuff and it is based on their Revolution 7.1. ZipZoomFly had it on sale for $70.00 and with free shipping.

A lot of people aren't aware of M-Audio's quality but a number of audiophiles I know swear by their quality.

Do yourself a favor and do a Google check on this card for reviews, etc.

The MPEG-2 Layer-3 (90% of MP3s) codec is only 2 channels anyways, so your not getting anything special out of 5.1. Just use onboard and see how you like it with the MP3s, because your not going to get anything amazing out of a new sound card, especialy if it is anything less then a SB Audigy 2 ZS.

Almost every source for music is also in a 2 channel format and you will gain nothing by upmixing it to a 6 channel+ media format because your soundcard/control pod/reciever can do it anyways, you just loose space. I guess you could rip those Super Audio Formats that arnt very popular.
