Sound card cuts out after a few seconds of playing

I have an Aureal Vortex2. When I try to do anything with it in win2k, it works for about 5-10 seconds, then it just stops working. The sound just stops and everything else is still running (the mp3 player and the rest of the compuer)

What is going on??
