Sound Card Confusion

Hi all,

This question may have been asked a million times but there was never a clear answer.

Which sound cards in the market today actually decode Dolby Digital 5.1 ?

Many Soundstorm fanboys say tons of good things about it, but apart from the 5.1 encoding, in what way is it so much better than any other card ?

From some posts, I gathered that the Audigy line of cards decode Dolby Digital with software or its driver, so is that a bad thing ?

Recently, Hercules released their Fortissimo 4 and that also boasts Dolby Digital decoding, so is it hardware decoding or software ?

Is there a difference between software decoding and hardware ?

And, there are some speakers out there that does Dolby Digital decoding and DTS decoding, like the Logitech z-5500, and that is specified as hardware, so is it better than the software decoding by Audigy ?

Reading all the posts and ads about sound cards has got me scratching my head so bad that i'm balding...

any experts on this subject ?

It depends which Audigy generation you have. They all decode DD 5.1 in drivers. Later generations add Dolby Digital EX, DTS, and DTS ES.

any experts on this subject ?
I don't believe that anyone in the PC Sound Card Industry knows what the hell is going on,
and so they intentionally keep it all screwed up.
Suggest that you trust your ears and quit trying to decode specs.
(Got to quit before I start ranting on Creative)

hah... so I guess the sound card industry is just as screwed up ?

How do I "hear" Dolby Digital ? Is there a huge difference between the ones that decode them and the ones that don't ?

Am I right to assume that only players like PowerDVD, WinDVD are able to read DD from the DVD's ?

Anybody use anything else apart from Creative ?
