I am looking to upgrade from onboard sound to an inexpensive sound card and to some 4.1 speakers. I would mostly use them for music and gaming.
For soundcard i was thinking the Hercules Fortissimo II. And for the speakers i was thinking Altec Lansing AVS500. I would like to know if they are compatible. i know nothing of sound hardware though i am fairly familiar with video cards and computers in general. And would anyone recommend something else? I have found each one for $32 on pricewatch for a total of $64.

Thank you.

I don't have any experience with the Fortissimo, but Phillips line of sound cards I have been impressed with. I currently am using the Acoustic Edge in my machine, which supports 5.1. You may look at the lower end cards they make, and see what you think. Sorry, no experience with Altec speakers, but my old labtec's sounded pretty darn good.

bump...
anyone else going to adress my questions?
mostly are all sound cars compatible with all speakers? if not are the Fortissimo II and AVS500 compatible?
but if you can answer my other question that would be good too.

I am about to sell my Altec Lansing ACS54 for Logitech Z-560. If you are interested, PM me and maybe we can set up a deal here. :)

I have a Fortissimo II OEM in one of my backups. Got it from newegg.com for about $32 if I remember right. Great sounding card. Not quite as good as my old, pricier Santa Cruz or Audigy obviously, but I'd get it before I get another SBLive though (I like the optical output). As far speakers is concerned, I'd rather have a really good 2.1 setup than a cheap (and possibly crappy) 4.1 setup. Considering your budget, I'd consider that.

The Fortissimo II is a good soundcard and is good for gaming thanks to Sensaura 3d... but I also like the Philips cards... see if you can get the Philips Rythmic Edge PSC703. It 's 4.1 channel... and has QMSS it is excellent for gaming and especially music...you won't regret it. As for the speakers...... they'll be very compatible. Altec's are good speakers.

Cheers.
