Sound Card and Speakers For Music Playback

I'm tring to setup my computer to be used as the sounds system for an upcoming party. What I need to know is, what is a good sound card? What brand of speakers? Should I look for a sound card that has RCA jacks for the audio out and run it throught a stereo sytstem?

I would like to try and keep the cost between $300-$400 dollars.

Thanks

Well, when I want the computer to be a sound / music server, I just use the OPTICAL outs on my SBlive drive and hook it into my digital surround sound system. I dont know how you are going to beat that. If you just want to go straight from your computer to speakers, then you are going to want a sound card with digital out, A sound blaster Live! of any kind really should do, I think turtlebeach santacruz also do... then just waste some money on like som 5.1 speakers or sometihng... and plug them up and go!

logitech z560s (plenty of low end support) and the tone control feature on the Phillips Acoustic Edge beats any other software equalizer ive used.

A great setup would be a sound blaster 16PCI with Cambridge SoundWorks PC Works.

I just upgraded my sound setup and here is what I got:

Terratec DMX 6fire 24/96 $265 Shipped
Cambridge SoundWorks MegaWorks 510D $283 Shipped

This is a little more than you want. So if you want JUST music playing, I'd go for an Midiman Audiophile 24/96 and the Logitech's Z560. Those two shipped will be around $300. Add another $125 and you can get the 510D speakers which have been rated better than the Klipsch 5.1's in music listening tests.

If you want audiophile quality stuff for a budget, get an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 for aroud $150, and connect it to your receiver/hifi speakers and let the party roll...I don't think dinky computer/multimedia speakers can hack it for a party...unless you're squeezing in a 8'x8' room and like loud, boomy distorted sound.
