This is really odd but yesterday I turned my PC on and instead of the nice Windows Vista 'Welcome' sound there was just a screeching ear piercing noise and it didn't matter what sound file or mp3 I tried to play, the result was just screeching. :(

I did uninstall the device and the driver and reinstalled the driver, for that session there was no more problems.

But this morning I turned on my PC and wham - screeching again. Could something be corrupting the sound driver? I didn't install anything new in the last 2 days.

It's unlikely that anything is corrupting the sound driver, and while there's a chance it's the hardware going bad I also doubt that. I'd chalk this up to Creative's crazy drivers, and in fact I'm pretty sure you're not the only person that has reported this issue. If you're not already running the latest X-Fi drivers, you should install those.

Oh, and how much RAM do you have? 4GB?
