The BIOS is the soul.

Everything else is just the physical body and part of the material world. Repent and be one with your BIOS!

I'd say the CPU/mobo would be the "soul." After replacing the CPU/mobo, I would no longer consider it an upgrade, but a new machine.

I would have to say the case.

but the mobo does give you that neat vibe when you put in the new one.

Technically this is the same computer that I've had for... 6 years.. It just gets upgraded a few pieces at a time.

To me it's not when you upgrade one part here.. one part there...

When you build a brand new computer, that's when it's a new computer. If you cut your leg off and sew on another, it's still you :p

But what if you replaced your brain? Then you aren't "you" anymore. So then replacing the CPU would mean that you have a new computer... except that I just did that, and I don't feel like I have a new computer. So it must be the motherboard, because that's the only component I haven't upgraded (not including the case).

Motherboard!!

I'm gonna go with motherboard, or maybe the case if you have one of those highly specialized computers (like a Shuttle).

Wait, what is the "car"? I mean, you can replace the engine, seats, etc. but what is the official piece that is the car? Isn't it like the frame or something?

Mine was named Behemoth, but later when practically every part was replaced, I named the new machine Behemoth JR, and the old machine I built back to stock and gave to my folks, naming it Behemoth SR..

How can hardware be the soul??
It's the software that adds a layer of abstraction and lets you "communicate" with the hardware. Computer loses power and the hardware dies when the software is extinguished.

My computers name is Chocobo Farm. Chocobo from the Final Fantasy series, and I've named my computer named something with chocobos for the longest time now. And Farm, for the fact that I use my computer for rendering, and I figure it was rather appropriate.
