I had to read the description to figure out WTF is going on.

Thing is, I see people who I KNOW have never used twitter put hashtags in their emails.

STOP IT! It's NOT HIP!

My first encounter with the hashtag phenom was watching Talking Dead show one night this past fall and the host was saying stuff like "hashtag CarlISAWhineyBitch" or whatever and I was wondering WTF is that for....

I used twitter once to find out if I could get to work last year. Now they spam me to "bring me back"

what is the purpose of hashtags? I never twittered or facebooked, so I'm well out of the loop.

Is there some necessary functionality to them? Do they actually refer to something if people use them in conversation? ....do people actually use them in conversation like this?

Further, what is wrong with people?

I've always assumed that the hash was a way of denoting something as a keyword on Twitter, to make it easier for them to monetize their users free content via metrics.

So as to quickly be able to find/follow a trend in a sort of thread-like fashion.

It's like indexing your own posts. Kind of like the thread tags feature of the forums. They're essentially the same as hashtags. In fact, I hereby an trademarking/patenting any integration between automatically hashtagging forum thread tags and twitter/facebook integration. You hear that vBulletin et al?

pound, it's called POUND.

I can see where it's useful. And over-used. I only use it to make fun of it. #causeImcool #andIneverseeanythingthatimportant #thoughtheyshouldacalleditKEYforkeywordinstead

It's fine when it's actually used for tagging, but it's overused for commentary. It's like when everyone in the geek world was using slashes (well, plenty still do), but with 100x the popularity.

/hash is the new slash?

I prefer whack whack, like when you are referring to a server and don't want to say backslash, backslash, so I just say "whack whack". People are finally getting to know what I'm talking about, and using it themselves now.

pound, it's called POUND.

I heard a answering service the other day that said "press the number sign for ...." I was amazed. Then I figured it's probably because not too many know what "pound" is.
