We had the same problem at our first house. I closed off the hole to the crawlspace that was close to the dog food, requiring them to make a longer trip from the next vent. With the prolonged exposure time, the dog was able to nab every last one of them.

About once a night for 10 nights, we would hear a loud banging of patio furniture, a loud squeal as the rat died a horrible death in the dogs jaws, then a loud bark of triumph from the superior canine mind ;)

ROFL...pics?

Well,
The Husky is the one who got the rats. That was a long time ago though, when he was just a pup, he is going on 12+ years now, and is having trouble getting around as well as he used too. Sad day when that dog passes, he has been like a firstborn for my wife and myself. I am afraid that my wife will be heartbroken when he passes, but such is life.

Damn that's a sweet looking dog.

at my dad's house, he has a bad rat problem also. thing is, they hide up in the trees and come down to eat the dog food. but my dad has had a rat problem before, and him and his dog make a fantastic team. so armed with his sheridan pellet rifle, a huge flashlight (freezes the rats), and his trusty pit bull by his side, he makes quick work of the rats. its either a one shot, one kill type of deal, or if the rat gets shot and falls, his dog will run over, step on its tail with its paw, play with it for awhile before delivering the fatal head shot. the dog is getting on in her years, but i guess by killing rats, she proving her worth. so, my suggestion for eradicating the rat problem is sheridan pellet gun (cost around $100+), a pit bull, a flash light, and a bunch of your dads stoner friends to make shooting the rats a game, and youll have your problem quickly solved. hoped my information helped. =)

btw, this is the gun: guaranteed rat killer (6-8 pumps should suffice)

If you do decide to use rat traps DO NOT USE CHEESE ... I saw a pretty informative TV show I think it was on National Geographic that rats LOVE peanut butter and are even willing to risk it all to get some.

Peanut Butter on trap = ?

Peanutbutter works, I have used it on the snap traps and have had good luck. Since you can fill the bait holder with it the mice will dig to get everything out, increasing the likelyhood of setting off the trap.

RossMAN, Would that be chunky or creamy peanut butter that they prefer? :)

Haha good question, they didn't go into detail.

Depending on my mood I prefer either and usually Jiff brand.

I drowned it in a bucket of water last night. I usually drown all the rats I caught.... Is that a good method btw? I toss the water for the trees afterward... hehe
