I can hear them crawling in the attic of my patio. The patio is also their favorite place to hang out. They like to steal my dog's food and knock things over. I once put my Lego pirate ship in the patio long time ago and had forgotten about it, until today when I was trying to clean up those rat poop I saw the ship knocked down onto the ground behind the cabinet. They had literally chewed up the Lego swords (cuz they're soft plastic). The ship is quite heavy for rats, but they did manage to push it over. Anyhow... Do those electric pest controllers that uses electromagnetic waves or ultrasonic sound works??? Anyone tried them? Cuz I'm simply tired of setting up cages and the tiny traps that dont work (they gotten very smart now).

HA! LOOK AT THIS POOR FELLA. I used a beef jerky to get this big one. One down, twenty four to go

I think at this point you need a shotgun! :Q

It time to get a pro in. They can spread some nasty stuff with their fleas and feces.

SOSTrooper, have you tried a professional extermination service? I know they are not inexpensive, but most do offer a "gurantee" of some sort, so if their first treatment of your home does not work, follow up visits are free, hope this helps :)

I dont want to use rat poison because they'll eat the poison, hide, and die somewhere within my house and their body will decay, their dead bodies will possibly smell bad, and more insects will be all over their dead bodies (meaning somewhere in my house)..... sooo ..... I hate rats.

We had the same problem at our first house. I closed off the hole to the crawlspace that was close to the dog food, requiring them to make a longer trip from the next vent. With the prolonged exposure time, the dog was able to nab every last one of them.

About once a night for 10 nights, we would hear a loud banging of patio furniture, a loud squeal as the rat died a horrible death in the dogs jaws, then a loud bark of triumph from the superior canine mind ;)

You want them gone, but you don't want them dead.

POISON THEM. Deal with the dead bodies later. Unless the things are 10 pounds each I doubt you will even know they are dead.

Well,
The Husky is the one who got the rats. That was a long time ago though, when he was just a pup, he is going on 12+ years now, and is having trouble getting around as well as he used too. Sad day when that dog passes, he has been like a firstborn for my wife and myself. I am afraid that my wife will be heartbroken when he passes, but such is life.

No, don't waste your money on those cr@p. I think it actually attracts them. I found that rat poison works best. Or if you have concern with other animals, just get a dogs/cats to hunt them down.

I have a labador (sp?) in my house, she is very good at catching rats. But it seems like the rats are getting very smart, they learned how to avoid her most of the time: by travelling on the roof, attic, behind funitures, through trees and come out when my dog sleeps in the front yard. I saw a couple of rats with my own eyes, they're quite large, about 5 to 6 inches long not counting the tail. They probably grew large from eating the dog food. Anyway, my dog gets pretty irritating sometimes when she knows the rats are around but she couldnt find them. So she would start knocking things over and squeeze herself inbetween my washing machine and such, and she 'whines' when she couldnt get to them. So actually the rats are not the only thing that annoy me..... I guess I'll try the traps one more time today and maybe I'll go look for some rat poison tomorrow.

If you have the money and like animals get a rat terrier. When I was young we had one and it was a better mouser than any cat we ever had, it even cornered a muskrat in our garage one time, the thing was easily twice as big as our dog. They are small and well mannered if trained and given attention. It sound like you may have tried them, but look at the live catch traps at Home Depot or Lowes. They are made to pretty much guarantee catching whatever goes after the bait, then just drown the bastards in a 5 gallon bucket.
About the poison, I have always set it out when I hear mice and have never come across a festering corpse. Someone once told me that rodents will instinctually go outside when they are ill/dying. I have no idea if that is a fact.
Also, the glue traps work really well, put them along the walls of your patio or in an area you know they travel. They squeal like crazy when they get stuck, so keep the baseball bat handy :)

You need to borrow my beagle. For whatever reason, she is an excellent rat killer.

Like I said in the post with the pic, this was a long time ago, about 1991, nobody had ever heard of a webcam. Hell most people had not heard of the internet. :)

I will add, this dog in his younger days was quite the varmit hunter. Confirmed kills from my psycho husky:

2 squirrels (verified by retired neighbor who witnessed it) neighbor claimed the dog ate the whole squirrel, tail and all
3 kittens, behind the house with the rats was an empty field which housed stray cats, on occasion the stray kittens would sneak under the fence and get the attention of the dog
2 cats, after we moved it got the neighbors cat, we moved again a few years later and it got our new neighbors cat.
1 opossum, found dead in the yard with the dog throwing the carcass in the air, hoping it would move again.
the family of rats
He almost killed the other dog in the pic, bit his head a little too hard when the other dog was a puppy, required an expensive trip to the vet.

Get a mean nasty cat. Works wonders.

The terrier idea is a good one as well. I had a Jack Russell and in addition to being the COOLEST dog ever, she was a brutal killer of anyhing unwelcome life forms who were unlucky enough to choose our house to infest. Only downfall was that one time I had to talk to the neighbors about their cat...
