The "Check ECS" light comes on, we take it to a dealer. It wasnt driving funny, we thought it could have been an electrical problem, because another light started flashing then turned off.

Just got the call from the dealer, they say it is "transmission failure", want $3500 for a new one. Shit, trannys in American vehicles are good for ~100K.

Is Honda service trustworthy? Obviously we are taking it somewhere else for another look, but it just seems odd.

Can you take it to an AutoZone or similar shop and get a free diagnostic reading? CEL do cycle on/off after so many starts.

Do you have the i4? If so try a different, stronger battery.

Usually the transmission actually fails before the light comes on. People on an Accord forum for the 7th gen (2003-2007) have noted random CEL's that no longer occured when they upgraded their battery

You need to tell us what year the car is and what engine it has (4-cylinder or V6).

When the transmission failed in my 2003 Accord V6, the check engine light never came on. I knew it was failing because I could feel it slipping when upshifting into third gear.

The V6 models had transmission problems, unfortunately. But if this is a 4-cylinder, I would be extremely surprised to hear the problem is really the transmission.

'02 V6. I guess it sounds like this was a problem for this year.

Ill take it to another place for sure.

I think you can disregard my post then since I thought you had 7th or 8th Gen.

I had transmission failure on my Civic, but I started losing gears left and right until I could not shift out of 2nd and then the transmission light came on, and I lost 2nd gear.
I ended up getting it rebuilt rather than buying a new one (cost me 1500CDN)

I also had an '02 V6 Accord. The transmission started slipping and then the Check Engine light came on. Took it to Honda Mall of GA (have treated me excellent over the years!) and they replaced the transmission at no cost even though it was out of warranty. All I had to pay for was a rental for two days.

There were a lot of recalls on Honda Auto trans of that era. My brother had a 3.2TL that did that. Dealer fixed him up for you.

Go to some Accord forums, see if there's any chance of getting it covered by Honda of America.

02 Accords and TL's had bad 2nd gear's, they were made wrong and would shatter from overheating.

I have a 2000 Accord V6 with 171,000 miles, original trans....starting to get a bit sloppy, but still runs well....

Same thing happened with my mother's '05 v6 accord.

I'm sorry for this. Your SO has a tranny problem...heh. Again, sorry.

Yep, the Acura TL/CL had major tranny problems during that time frame. Got rid of mine to avoid the problem.

I thought Honda extended the warranty to 100K miles on that gen V6 accord? Anyone know how many years it was?

Japanese cars don't break down, it's user error, remember that.

lol.

When you guys say "slipping" into another gear, what do you mean? My 1st to 2nd on automatic sometimes just...drops into another gear when accelerating. So...for 0-35 while accelerating it feel funny like it I guess 'slipped' into 2nd gear unnaturally.

2001 V6 accord. 115k.
