sorting forums by original post date?

Some time ago this site had the functionality to sort by most recent threads (rather than by newest post within threads) and I wondered how I can do that now?

By putting a check in the box that says "Order search results by date"?

No. Not for searching, but for browsing the forums. I want to browse the forums, seeing the most recently created threads first. By default, the forums are shown with most recently replied to threads first. There used to be privately run thread-sorters that do what I want after the ability to sort by thread creation date disappeared a few years ago. Do any of those thread-sorters still exist, or has that ability been reincorporated into the forums?

oldsmoboat, I might be blind, but I don't see that feature in my profile panel. Whether ascending or descending, it's still sorting by reply time and not original post time.

I remember that you could apply this feature to a specific board (eg: it was invaluable on fs/t, but useless on other forums).

As far as I know, that feature was removed over 3 years ago and has never been reintegrated. I don't know about any privately run thread sorters. Hopefully someone else has that information for you.

Jason Clark removed the feature a while back because "hardly anyone used it."

Actually, IIRC the reasoning was that they couldn't be bothered to do the localization for it in the new version of Fusetalk -- presumably because "hardly anyone used it". It's a pretty piss-poor excuse either way.

It's not that useful in discussion forums. For something like FS/T or Hot Deals it's REALLY helpful to be able to look at things that were actually posted recently instead of just whatever is being bumped 10 times an hour today.

Other forums get to sort all kinds of ways :(

We can barely search and you want a sort function?! :p

That would involve using a real forum app, not Fusetalk Beta like we have here.

The solution I came up with was to create a new forum account and change "Days back to view topics for:" to 1 day on the page oldsmoboat linked and then to look through the list of posts for the ones that had small number of views and replies. (Yes I decided to create a new account for viewing Hot Deals and For Sale/Trade that way but that doesn't mean FuseTalk is garbage).

The fact that "nobody uses that feature" is why the Hot Deals forum was practically dead for a couple years while other similar forums on the internet expanded enormously. That doesn't mean FuseTalk is garbage, it just means someone (whose name I do not care to know) is a moron.

---

happyhelper,

Because our forums are so large, we prefer our members to maintain only one active account at a time. This is especially important on our For Sale/Trade forum where multiple accounts have often been used by malicious trolls attempting to defraud our traders, but it is important on all of our forums.

Please reply to give us the name for your other account, and let us know which one you want to continue using. We can even exchange the names between the accounts if that is your preference. However, we cannot allow you to continue using two accounts.

Sorry for any inconvenience. Thanks for understanding. :)

A word to the wise - admitting that you have duplicate accounts is not usually a smart thing to do here.

they aren't duplicate accounts, they are different accounts

anyway, will this new software that is being installed finally correct this impediment to sorting that has persisted for the last few years?
