Sorta OT: My new computer is up and crunching!

Story:
I'm sure that at least some of you (Networkman and Ray) remember when Geoff had to sell his office herd. I inquired about purchasing a full system worth of parts, so I could have my first 'home built' computer (for Linux work, crunching, etc.). Geoff gladly obliged and made me a very generous offer. I accepted and deal went off. He even included/installed a spare copy of Win98SE and other software (Norton Systemworks 03, Office 97). However, when I received the system, Windows was not stable, and the install process always failed partway through. Later, after applying AS5 to the heatsink, the computer would not even boot up at all. Geoff offer to do tech support with me, and ended up with the system back in his home, and quickly fixed the problem by replacing the motherboard. He even offered to pay for the shipping (which we later changed to him giving me a TT Volcano 7+). Anyway, my mother and brother who weree in the region doing a college search, picked up the computer from him and brought it back. Now it is up and crunching, thanks to a great TeAm member and trader.

Athlons seem to really shine on FaD.

I had until recently, and hope to have back soon (another story) a couple of Athlon XPs running at 2 Ghz and they were averaging a score of around 185-195 points per hour. The P4-3.2Ghz PCs in the same office being used for the same tasks (almost zero real CPU usage) all averaged 150 points or less per hour... 🙂

... and thanks! 🙂 I'm glad that puppy is back up and running... the old mobo has been tossed after salvaging the battery, jumpers and BIOS chip 🙂 That monster was running in my living room for the longest time until one day there was a power failure and my wife discovered how quiet the living room would be with it not running! 😛

Im going through Prime now, and its been fine for 12 hours. Load temp 56C, which is quite good for a modified stock HSF.

MSI included an OCing utility, which may help me get a few extra MHz. (Just have to see if it puts PCI back to 33 MHz when the FSB is up to 166, if not, my PCI cards may get picky and keep me from a large OC).

If its got a KT266,KT266a or early KT333 chipset then it won't give you 33MHz PCI at 166MHz.In which case you'll probably be ok upto about 152MHz FSB.
