Sort of OT - need some tech support

The machine runs SETI, so I figure it's alright to ask you guys :) Hopefully one of you geniuses can tell me what exactly is wrong here:

I've got a problem with one of my computers (click the Systems link in my sig, it's DarkMajiq's 1.5GHz Athlon). I built it for my dad a while ago. Anyway, he turned it on this morning, and there was kind of a funny burning plastic smell and apparently it was BSODing with all sorts of error messages. So, he turned it off. I came to take a look at it, and the first thing I noticed is that the top of the case is covered in dust (the house isn't entirely finished, and they were doing some work in his office recently). So, I go and unplug all the cables and such, and open it up. And holy shíte was there a lot of dust in there! So I set about with the dustbuster and the vacuum and the duster and managed to get most of it out. So, I start it up again with the case open - the mobo has a convenient little LED that can show you most things that are wrong. Anyway, it starts up fine, goes into Windows. The only problem is the keyboard isn't working (yes, it was plugged in). I also tried another keyboard, and it didn't work either. Anyway, tried a couple more times, nothing seemed to work. I can't get into the BIOS since they keyboard's not working. And now when I start it up, it stalls at the screen right before the Windows ME logo comes up. It's saying something about DMI Updated or something like that. To finally get to the point, I'm thinking that this is a motherboard problem. I'd originally thought processor, since that would have explained the smell, and its cooler was making a horrible noise when I first tried it before cleaning it thouroughly of dust, but the fact that the keyboard's not working would seem to indicate to me the mobo, although the LED runs through the check and shows FF (fully functioning). Should I try to clear the CMOS? Or what should I do?

If you have any USB keyboards, try that (or vice versa).

Did you inspect the PS/2 ports for burnt or melted plastic? The port may have shorted out.

Unfortunately I don't have a USB keyboard, and don't know anyone who could lend me one. The PS/2 port looks fine. Also, it's now trying to go into Windows Safe Mode. It goes to the screen where you can select Safe Mode, Normal, etc... Of course since the keyboard doesn't work, you can't move the cursor from Safe Mode, so it tries that. Once the 30 seconds are up, it goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner and hangs there.

A DarkMajiq sighting! Long time no see ;)

Have you tried taking off, cleaning up, and reseating the processor, memory etc? Kinda a long shot, but the checkup may help it out....other than that, at the moment, i'm out of ideas (other than the USB keyboard option)

Heh, yeah, I haven't been around much in a long time, when my time was starting to get constrained, all the time I spent at various forums was one of the first things to go, but hopefully things are easing up now and I may be back in a limited capactiy :) Did you drop the BW from your name, Confused?

Actually, the processor is what I went off to do after that last post... I think that may have been the culprit. There was a feckload of dust in the heatsink and it appeared some may have gotten between the processor and the heatsink, so I'm in the process of doing that. Hopefully it'll do the trick.

I would recommend clearing the CMOS, re-seating everything, CPU, RAM, etc. then try. If that doesn't work, the MB may be toast. :(

I believe there is a PS2 -> USB converter for keyboards.

Maybe check the FS/T forum?

Yeah, i did drop the BW bit, a few months back, can't remember when! Edit: Thought I'd drag up the past, here is the thread in which I announced it...15th April last year! Jeez....was it that long ago!

Anyway, as for your computer, if it's still playing up, you may want to call up a local Mom&Pop computer store, and see if they have a USB keyboard you can try, with possibilities of buying it if it is the PS/2 ports that are gone :)

Well, it wasn't the processor, although after I cleaned and re-seated it, at least the lights on the keyboard flash on briefly as the normally do, although it still doesn't work. I tried a CMOS clear and re-seating the RAM, and now I get CMOS Checksum error. Defaults loaded. Press F1 to continue or DEL to enter setup. Good. Only thing is the keyboard still doesn't work, so I can't press either :) So, I'm going to get a USB keyboard tonight and hopefully it'll do the trick.

Try another keyboard. You never know if something may have been spilled on it.

Well, I've tried two different keyboards, both of which work fine on this machine, so I don't think it's that.

Hmm... It won't let me edit the last post, so I'll make a new one for the update. I got a new cordless keyboard and it works fine :)

Heh... That was so long ago even I'd almost forgotten... Glad to know I'm still loved ;) Hopefully in addition to spending some time here I'll also be able to get SETI running a little more, start turning out some WUs an a consistent basis again.
