This will be my second built from scratch comp so I'm not a total newbie but I certainly haven't kept up with details of components as I should have.
After some initial research I have come up with the following possibilities for my build. The prices I quote are from newegg as of yesterday w/shipping. Would be open to any ideas you may have that won't add to the overall price - then I would have to go back to "she who must be obeyed" for further approval.
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ $218
Soltek SL-K890Pro-939 (PCI) $127
Corsair TwinX3200C2PT (2x512) $193
Viewsonic VP171B-2 (8ms) $345
EVGA 6600GT (PCI) $198
WD Caviar WD1600SD (SATA) $120
Aspire ATXA1A Case w/420w psu $90
Lite-On SHOW-812S Dual layer burner $64
Lite-On SOHD-167T DVD drive $28
Sony 3.5 floppy drive $11
Logitech Elite USB/PS2 keyboard $36
Logitech MX 500 mouse $42
Logitech X-230 speakers $42
The viewsonic seems to be the best lcd for gaming I could find. Really want to get the crt heat producer off my desk.
The 3200+ seems to have good overclocking and would negate the need to go for the 3500+.
Everything else on the list got very good - excellent reviews from the research I did. I admit that cases, power supplies, and cpu cooling are my weakest areas of knowledge.
Once again, would be most appreciative of any thoughts/ideas you have on these choices.
