Sorry... just have to vent....

A while back I bought a Hyundai Vera Cruz. Love the car. No complaints there.

The Hyundai/Nissan dealer I bought the car from set me up with Nissan Financial Services for five years at 8.5%. Kind of a high rate, I know, but I was changing jobs, between residence and banks (my current bank, Wachovia, was not located where I was moving to so I closed the account) and could pay for the car in cash if I wanted to so wasn't concerned as long as there was no penalty for early pay off (apparently there often is!)

So I get to my new residence and my first invoice for the car arrives only a few days short of the due date. First off, the invoice was not from Nissan. Apparently they sold my loan to Regions Bank. Ok, whatever, the rates the same, my monthly payment is what they told me it was going to be... whatever. Big problem here is that Regions does not have any way to pay loan payments online. If you bank with Regions, you can do online banking. But I don't bank with Regions primarily because there are no Regions banks in Illinois!

I call up Regions to ask them why I only had five days to pay the bill. The lady tells me the statement was sent out eight days ago. I looked at the postmark and it was dated the 7th! The day was the 15th and the due date was the 20th. I told her, "I think this is going to be a problem." She said, "Don't worry about it, there's a ten day grace period." TEN DAYS?!? Holy crap. Ok. I won't worry about it. I sent in the check and don't worry about it.

Sure enough, they must have received my check in time because the next month I get my statement and there's no late fee and once again it's postmarked 8 days prior to my receiving the bill. Once again, I send in my check assuming they'll get it within the next fourteen days or so.

This past month I received my statement and there's a $25 late fee on it! I immediately called them up. "Hi, you guys send out my statement on the 7th, for some reason I don't receive it until the 15th and the due date is the 20th. I was told that there's a 10 day grace period on top of that, yet somehow my check arrived late and now I'm getting charged a late fee?"

"Yes," the service rep responds, "We received your check on the 31st."

WHOA!!!! I don't know if the problem with the postal service is in Alabama or Illinois, but since when does it take 15 days to mail a check!?!?

"Well, that's not my fault. Did anyone bother to look at the postmark?"

"No."

"Well, if you guys had online bill pay, I'd pay it the day I receive the invoice. It's not my fault that you guys are technologically challenged."

"Sorry sir."

"Can I have this late fee reversed. I've called with concern over the length of time it's taken for me to receive my invoice and I was told that I have nothing to worry about. A $25 late fee IS something to worry about."

"Sorry sir. Can't do anything about it. Late is late. Your check arrived late."

So I hang up, and call my new bank in Illinois. Not only is the interest rate going to go down from 8.5% to 6.2%, but I shortened the loan from 5 years to 4 years and my monthly payment is STILL less! Furthermore, I can pay online at 5/3's website and they actually give me another 0.25% off the interest rate for doing so. HA! Take that Regions bank. Jerks.

Regions recently bought AmSouth, where my bank account was. I hate the regions website with their asinine security policies. Apparently accessing your account from too many different computers will lock it out. And you have to call to get it unlocked. I'm seriously considering changing banks.

Funny that was the same stoy with me. Regions took over AmSouth. I only have a checking account with them <since early 90s) and I will see if Regions is the devil.

Yeah, I've heard that Regions is not necessarily a bad bank, but I've heard horror stories about the merger with Amsouth and how people that had accounts that weren't "compatible" with the Regions "system" mysteriously disappeared. And my first impressions of their website immediately put me off. I have no idea why and how my car load ended up there, but I don't recommend it to anyone. ;)

Good for you. Gotta take a stand some times.

When signing away my life I asked my mortgage lender if I could pay my bill online. "Yes" he said. He didn't mention that there was a $10 fee for each transaction, or I could sign up for bill pay at $7/mo for that one transaction. I went in there pissed, threatened to pull my 3 direct deposit accounts and my mortgage... Now I have free bill pay that I use for that one transaction.

A local rich guy got pissed off at them as well. He was on the board and they wouldn't do what he wanted. So he just went and opened his own bank. And had the cash to run the thing 7 days a week, on holidays, etc. and ran Regions here into the ground.

Century Bank

A guy named Truman Arnold. Made a lot of money running gas stations and stores. About 10 years ago this was a single location bank in a town of about 25,000. He bought it and now there are a few dozen.

Open 7 days a week, everyday except "real" holidays like Christmas (no Columbus day BS). Free checking (the norm now I guess). $0 ATM costs regardless of where you withdraw. No overdraft charges (up to $300). Pretty much the best loan rates.

Really kicking companies like Bank of America, Regions, etc. in the balls.

He wants something, it happens. No waiting around on stuff to be decided on, etc.

Regions and AmSouth just plain suck. I've been banking with them for a little over a year now, and not once but twice they have arbitrarily closed my secondary account without notice, causing several overdraft issues in the process (the accounts were linked for that purpose). They won't let my put my wife on the account simply because we never got her a Florida license when we moved down here and they don't do business in New York... despite the fact that my wife's name is printed on the checks. They basically suck. Can't wait to move back to New York and get a real bank again.

Where do you live that you only have one choice of bank to use? Hell, even in bumfuck middle of the bayou Louisiana town there are at the very least 3 banks to choose from.

They are crooks CONFIRMED!!!!

They must postmark their invoices and then sit on them until the end of the week or something.

After receiving the last invoice LATE but before I called 5/3 to refinance, I called Regions one more time to bitch. After trying every angle, I was told the only solution was to sign up for automatic account withdraw so they could take the money out of my bank account automatically on the due date. Ironically, this could not be done over the phone or online LIKE YOU CAN DO WITH EVERY OTHER FREAKING BANK IN THE NATION. They had to MAIL me a form.

Well guess what? Form is post marked 11/16. Today is 11/19. Only three days from Birmingham, AL to Hainesville, IL. Imagine that. It takes 3 days to mail a form to give them permission to access my checking account, but it takes 7 to 10 days to mail me a bill.

WATCH OUT people. These guys are obviously SCAMMERS!

This isn't directly related to the OP...but WTF is up with companies charging extra for online bill paying? What a bunch of fucks. I went to pay my power bill online for the first time (just moved) and I find out that all of their options (CC, electronic check) they charge you $5 to do it. And their website doesn't work with anything but IE (get with the times douchebags!) Well, it only costs me $0.41 + some change to mail a motherfucking check.

So now I have one stupid bill that I can't pay online. You know this online bill pay stuff costs them less to administer then tranditional paper bills, but do they pass those savings on to you? No! Even worse, they CHARGE YOU MORE for the exciting right to save them time and administration costs. Its the same fucing scam as text messages on cell phones costing about as a voice phone call even though it uses virtually no bandwidth. Well, fuck them. Process my paper check.

Yeah. I got my first gas bill from Nicor last week (apparently it's an every two month bill, so I hadn't received one yet) and they wanted to charge me to pay on line. Screw that. I'll use a stamp.

LOL, crooks indeed. Their ethic is very questionable, who the hell bills only 10 days before the due date?

Hah! I work inside of a Regions Bank building. My company rents space from them. According to our management they are terrible to deal with, and we are trying to get out of our lease ASAP.
