I really didn't expect iPads to kill notebook sale, I thought it would affect netbooks, but reviewing my personal use, I now use my desktop, iPad & smartphone, I haven't fired up my laptops in months...

Apple's gonna sell a ton of shit this Christmas....

iPad is a superior entertainment device, so most people who bought laptops to watch movies and surf the internet would do better with an iPad.

with that said, most people who will still buy a laptop are the college-bound and travelling businessmen. an iPad doesn't replace a laptop for work-driven purposes.

I fired up my laptop for the first time in months yesterday since I've mostly been using my iPad as well. The only reason I used my laptop then was because I was too lazy to walk to my desktop to program my Harmony remote.

Really though, while I like the iPad, I'd kill for a tablet with just a little more functionality.

Yes... we should use a graph that shows sales during a one year period during a time where the economy is getting worse and worse.

Great graph, now how about we do something about increasing the pirate population? Global Warming is occurring at a time where pirates are dying off.

I rarely touch my netbook, notebook, or desktop anymore either. I will use it to do business related stuff but for general use around the house, I use my smartphone or my wife's iPad. Problem is usually my wife or daughter is using the iPad. I was going to wait for Android tablet or iPad 2.0 to buy my own but I'm running out of patience. We definitely could use another iPad as a family. I just don't want to get two of the first generation when my wife and I really want iPad 2.0. April 2011 seems so far away.

The CEO of Best Buy says iPad sales are cannibalizing laptop sales to the tune of 50%.

Mr. Dunn also said internal estimates showed that the iPad had cannibalized sales from laptop PCs by as much as 50%.

I honestly don't understand your post or your point, are you more familiar with what's selling at Best Buy than the CEO?

When the iPad showed up, I predicted a fundamental change in the way people view & interact with personal computers, that seems to be the case. Apple started the revolution, and I suspect other tablets will continue & accelerate the trend.

Uh, the economy has been in the dumps for a lot longer than 2010 YTD. Living under a rock much?

It looks to me like notebooks had a massive upwards swing in 2009, and have leveled off this year. These are just year over year growth numbers. Notebooks aren't exactly new - can you expect them to continue increasing in sales at a rate of 60-70% every year?

Anyway, while the iPad likely contributed here, its foolish to assume its the only factor. Lets not forget how ubiquitous the smartphone is becoming, and netbooks contribute here as well. In the past, a notebook was really your only option for portable computer. Now, there are many options. I know I've replaced my notebook with a desktop & smartphone.

I will never buy another notebook again after the last one's Geforce 8400m crapped out. I built a new computer and rely on my smartphone for non-desktop usage. I doubt that notebooks cannibalization is only because of the iPad. All these powerful smartphones have made people realize they just do email, watch short videos, and browse the web on their notebooks. Smartphones are far more convenient for that.

Yep, both the iPad and larger screen smart phones are likely the main reasons beyond macro economic factors. And, with each new generation of smart phone offering greater features, performance and larger screens that trend is likely to continue.

It will be interesting to see what the sweet spot in size for tablets will wind up being. The iPad and several others are in the 10 inch range but I suspect the most popular size, in the long term, will be closer to 8.5 inch screens with HD resolution and smaller bezels.

One thing that could use some work is the printer options for smart phones and tablets. With wifi and bluetooth available the devices have the communication capability but we need the printer makers to plug-and-playafy the connection for phones and tables in a more consistent manor.

Lol, there was a similar thread to this in the off topic forum that got so bad it was closed.

I think what's happening is that a lot of people "consume" content. I think this is where a more portable device is more ideal.

Hopefully cooler heads will prevail here.

As I said, I suspect tablets will be a fundamental change in the way consumers intract with data, media, network, etc...

I'm NOT saying the iPad is that device, it's only the current device, as well as smartphones.

I also think a lot of people get their panties in a wad because they're the local guru of the PC.

I am sure tablets are making an impact and pulling in notebook sales, but there are other factors at play as well:
-Softer economy, less business/consumer notebook spending.
-End of transition cycle from desktop to notebook. That transition was the major factor driving increasing notebook sales.
-No significant new capabilities for notebooks (from average consumer's point of view) since dual core processors were introduced, no catalyst to replace, aside from wear and tear. Most consumers are using computers for internet/access to cloud. Computers have gotten good enough for that 3-4 years ago, and obsolescence is happening at a much slower for devices that are mainly just there to access the internet.

Tablets will cannibalize consumer laptops a lot, but not education/work laptops.

Yeah it'll be interesting to see how things change. Even consumers will still want the ability to rip/encode/edit pictures, videos and music...features which current tablets are not able to provide adequately.

In my case, I will probably retain my desktop and ditch my laptop in the future, in favor of a tablet.

I already ditched my lappy in favor of my phone. Now I'm leaning towards a smaller screen phone and some type of tablet.

but look at the smart phone growth in the same time period.

I wonder how BB's cellular sales are doing?

Not to mention laptops have stagnated as far as features.

I think the BB CEO is a smart guy. Laptop sales are down and obviously iPad sales are up (new product). The iPad also drives a ton of accessory sales where BB makes their money. Why not draw a correlation between iPad and laptops and potentially create even greater demand heading into the holiday buying season. No one is buying laptops anymore because the iPad is better. Do you have a laptop but not an iPad? Duh you need an iPad. Inception...

Whether or not the iPad is the true cause for laptop sales decreases or not is really irrelevant.

I am waiting for multi-tasking on the iPad. Right now I can't web browse, chat on aim, and listen to Pandora at the same time so it has no chance of replacing a PC for me yet.

iOS 4.2 has it. Pandora in the background and you can quickly jump between AIM and Safari.

If you are wanting a like floating AIM window on top of the web browser, or shared screen or something... I don't know, can Android do that (iOS's main competitor), otherwise, get a Windows 7 tablet.

As far as I know Android doesn't have a floating window type thing. An AIM widget may exist but I don't know.

I don't mind just switching between multiple full screen apps however. I already have the iPad so I don't think I'm gonna buy another tablet anytime soon, just am hoping the iOS 4.2 update will deliver the goods.

what are the absolute figures? the whole computer market has been soft this summer, so we'd also want to compare to desktop figures (as ipad hardly competes with those)

The beauty of the iPad is that it cuts into the sales of all other notebook manufacturers, but not Apple itself because it's notebooks don't compete in that price category.

It's actually an amazing strategy.
