Sorry if this is better catagorized under "security"

I have vista premium (32-bit), and use a university-provided 'symantec endpoint protection' suite which provides antivirus, antispyware, proactive threat, and network threat protection.
I would like some input on a few things...

1) I assume the 'proactive threat protection' has some heuristics options/capabilities: Are these worth having enabled? I vaguely remembering reading they increase utilization a bit without actually catching much that isn't included in the definitions list/file: I read this as a general point of all security suites, not something specific to what I have. I'm temporarily running my system w/ only a gig of ram, and it's gonna take time to get more (long story- take my word for it- time is the main factor)- so if what I mentioned is indeed true, would it serve me well to disable them if I can, leaving any 'real-time' protection on?

2) Vista, like xp, does a fine job at detecting 3rd-party protection programs, and showing their status in the 'windows security center'. It also does a good job, when it detects a 3rd party program, @ disabling similar windows features so their isn't a conflict. How do windows' security features compare to the program I have? Am I increasing resource utilization needlessly?

3) Is there any way to change the 'windows security center' alert setting to alert me to a real problem, but not always give a notification or persistent taskbar icon bothering me about how the 'user account control' is disabled? It only gives three options- they are basically; STFU, show a notification, alert me by placing an inconspicuous icon on the taskbar (where I rarely look). None of these meet what I'm aiming for...
Further on (3):
Independent of the above inquiries [1 & 2], I don't enable the 'user account control' on my personal systems. I find it a pain in the rear to have to give a confirmation for an action when I make a change and know what I'm doing. That, and it slows down my system a lot b/c I have aero enabled and those pop-ups come up and the background dims to highlight said pop-up- which I abruptly approve. Having an old gfx card, and an under-supply of ram in my system, the slowdown is apparent and annoying as all get out. I'm not looking for add-on mods/programs, scripts, or registry changes- are there native windows options with more depth to meet my needs?
