Sorry if this has been asked before but, is it possible to play a DVD over a 100 mbps network off another PC w/ DVD rom?

Is this possible? The other computer does not have a dvd-rom, but my other one does and they are both networked together.. Will it work if I share my DVD rom drive and the other computer plays it?

1X DVD is 1385 KBytes/sec, you should be able to stream it live.

The question would be whether or not your DVD software would recognize the drive & play it.

If you use a ripping program such as SmartRipper or DVD Decrypter to rip the VOBs to a hard drive, and then map to that hard drive and try to "stream" it off that - yes, it'll most likely work. You might not be able to enable Subtitles or change Audio channels however.

However trying to play directly off the DVD will most likely not work. You will get conflicts with the DVD Authentication routines.

Streaming dvd's over a network is one of the uses of this software, though I haven't tried it because my system with a dvd drive only has winxp on it.

I did it on the VT network last fall. We had a movie night in a friend's room, but he didn't have a DVD-ROM (but had the nicer furniture), so I shared mine and we watched it no problem. I had Win2K, he had 98. But it ran smooth as hell.

so what did you do to do it? rip the disk? just map to it from a player?

<< would that macrovision thing get in the way at all? >>

Macrovision is intended to block the analog recording of a video signal onto VHS tape or similar analog media. I don't think it will affect what anyone is trying to do here.

There are 2 "blocks" that will try to inhibit the current situation though: 1. DVD Authentication routines (ever try to just use Windows Explorer to copy a .vob file to your HD? DVD Authentication blocks that) 2. CSS encrypted VOB files (assuming you manually authenticate your DVD-ROM the encryption is another wrench in your plans unless you use a ripping program of some sort).

From his description it sounds like he just shared his DVD-rom and mapped to it from the player on the computer that they wanted to watch from. Did that make sense?

i think hmm, i'll have to try that out...

yeah, yeah, map it as a network drive. i whad been thinking that cause power dvd won't browse over the network, you'd be outa luck, but if you map it as a drive, it should just show up in there with the other local drives...

PowerDVD has a file player function. I'm not sure about WinDVD. You convert 'em to divx, though and they''ll play in WMP. Or you can download another player like Zoomplayer.

i don't think it can refresh fast enough to remote desktop in. and what about sound?

i mapped a drive, and power dvd seemed open the disc fine, but i was trying it on a P166 MMX, which obviously can't play DVD's cause it's too slow. i'll havve to try once i get this dell i have lying around up and running.
