I am really sorry for not being able to do the stats and to post as much as I used to.
Real life has prepared a lot for me to chew for the next 6 - 8 weeks.

It is not only work (which is a lot even considering the autumn rush) but our house is being rebuilt: the electrical heating is being ripped out, environmentally friendly heating built in: heat exchangers, deep ground heating, solar power, all combined into a nice package - but what a mess :( .
The kids are doing great, but they need a lot of support since we are going for an extended trip to Australia for a whole month in 8 weeks and they are going to miss three weeks of school and have to do the work in advance, which probably is better than catching up...
Then there are two professional conferences I am attending ...
The G/F is very supporting and we have decided to get married - sometime when the rush ends - probably in some 6 months or so :)D this is the really good news). Oh, BTW: she likes computers a lot to and does not mind DC at all!

So this leaves no time at all for crunching fun. I'll leave the computers on for crunching, look after them once a week or so, steal some time for visiting - like now ;) , and the rest of the time ... well you know all how stuff is sometimes.

I'll be back. I am not taking a rest because I want to, but because I must. It is all about priorities: to work hard now and to have fun later.

So all of you, take care and enjoy, I'll be lurking around for the odd 10 minutes here and there.

Rattledagger, thanks for the daily Seti-stats!
Christian, a.k.a BMC, I am reading your Rosetta stats too,
Johan, the DPAD-stats are very much appreciated.
All the others (such as GLeeM, Spacehead) I re4ad your threads and post too - not always but when there is time.

Go Team Anandtech, Go!
Go TAS, Go!

Hola, Peter, long time no see!

Great news indeed man!!!

My family did the whole heating thing about 5 years ago, oh man, what a mess and pile of rubble and dust.

Where are the conferences you're attending? Maybe out of Sweden? Somewhere near central Europe? In a country with great  culture? ;)

hey my TAS friend,
I haven't seen you in a while!

good to hear you.

don't worry about us and the stats, we're doing fine even without them. Isn't the science we're doing what really matters? ;)

Good to hear the relationship with the G/F is working out. :) A real plus that she's into DC too! :D

Since you're going to Australia, you'll have to look up some of our DC members... I know there's a couple located "down under." ;)

Congrats Peter :)

Getting married has been the best thing I have done in my life (of course it helped that I found the perfect woman ;) ). If she likes computing and DC then you already know you have a winner :D

I'm probably a little off, but it's basically a bunch of rods/pillars/pipes that are dug deep below the earth underneath a structure. The natural constant temperature is conducted through these objects & thus you won't need oil/coal/Hansel & Gretel/etc. to warm your home in the winter, or cool your home in the summer(to a certain point). Some systems use liquids(akin to the cooling systems in some computers), while others use air or even just stone & heavy metals. Expensive, but it's great for the enviroment & saves money in the long run.

Petrusbroder is getting alot done, so I don't know how that whole system would interact, but I imagine it will be amazing. Efficiency has come along way since being the last family on my block to get their wood burners replaced. :)

Hi team mates, Petrus checking in ...

Thanks for all the support and congrats, they are very much appreciated. I did not know that I had so many caring mates ...

About the deep-ground-heating (I do not know if that is reall the correct word) but Coquito got it right.
I am (OK, the contractor) is drilling three holes into the ground close to my house. Each hole is about 150 m (=492 feet) deep, in each hole is a long tube with circulating liquid which is pumped through a heat exchanger in my basement. I have also some 35 square yards (=25 square meters) solar heating panels on my roof (we have a lot of sun in the spring, summer and autumn) connected to the same heat exchanger. In summer the system pumps excess heat into the ground, in winter I extract it. Since I have also heat exchangers in my ventilation system, the efficiency of the compbined system is approximately 90% i.e. I get back 90% of all the heat generated in the house (including refrigerators, freezers, computers, stove, fire place). This means that my DC-comps will heat my entire house ...
It is though a tremendous mess .... all the pipes, ventilators etc have to be installed. The government supports this with 30% of the cost, so it really pays off - in my neighborhood almost all houses do something similar. I expect to cut down om electricity from 38 000 KWh (2005) to 7 000 - 7 500 KWh (including electricity for cooking refrigarators etc. I will also get all my hot water from the system. And remember, this is north of Sweden - a cold place in winter.
What about power outage? Well, I have puchased a used military 5 KWh diesel power generator which should cover my needs quite well, except if the temperature stays below -30 degrees C (-22 degrees F) for more than 5 days --- then I'll have to shut the computers down while cooking or baking. So I feel quite good ...

Nice if DC heats a house, isn't it?

Thanks again for the support and take care!

That sounds really nice! The deep-ground-heating sounds interesting, that's really a good solution seeing that the electricity goes down that much.

I don't know about the temperatures where you live, but is it possible that it stays below -30°C for more than 5 days?

As far as DC heating goes: My student apartment is about 20 m² large, and with the 5 PCs in it crunching 24/7, I NEVER have to turn on the heating in winter times, and that's south Germany near the Alps. So, thex extra cost I have with electricity is actually lower than what I save by not having to use any gas for the heating! Pretty smart, eh? ;)

Congrats on the upcoming marriage.

Have a great trip, and take lots of pictures. :camera:

As for changed heating-system, sounds expensive and time-consuming to install, but with the huge drop in electricity-usage, would expect the expenses is earned-in again in a couple years.
Oh, and since DC will heat your house, can probably also add more computers.

No worries haven't the time to visit so often, DC is afterall just an (expensive) hobby.

-30 C... brrr, that's cold...

That heating/cooling system along with solar panels sounds like an excellent system!:)
Do you have any technical links about it?
